The Right Mowing Height for South Carolina Grass Types

Mowing height is one of the most impactful — and most ignored — factors in lawn health. The right height depends on your grass species, and in South Carolina we deal with several distinct types that each have different needs. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons lawns struggle in summer.

Bermudagrass: Mow It Low

Bermuda is the most common warm-season lawn grass in Upstate SC. Recommended height: 3/4 to 1.5 inches for common Bermuda; 1/4 to 3/4 inch for hybrid Bermuda varieties. Bermuda is a sun-lover that thickens and crowds out weeds when mowed at appropriate height with sharp blades. Mowing it too high (2+ inches) creates a thatch layer that harbors disease and reduces density. The key rule: never remove more than 1/3 of the blade height in a single mowing.

Zoysiagrass: Medium Height, Sharp Blades

Zoysia is increasingly common in newer Upstate SC developments. Recommended height: 1 to 2 inches, depending on variety. Zoysia is slow-growing and forms a dense carpet that's naturally resistant to weeds when healthy. It's more forgiving of occasional higher mowing than Bermuda but will develop thatch problems if consistently mowed too high. Always use sharp blades — Zoysia's tough leaf structure tears rather than cuts cleanly with dull equipment.

Centipede: Leave It Alone

Centipede grass has a reputation for being low-maintenance — and it is, if you leave it alone. Recommended height: 1 to 2 inches. Centipede is a slow grower that suffers when over-fertilized or over-mowed. The most common mistake is treating it like Bermuda and mowing or fertilizing aggressively. Centipede decline is often caused by well-intentioned over-management.

Tall Fescue: Keep It Taller

Fescue is a cool-season grass used in shaded areas and sometimes as a full lawn in parts of Upstate SC. Recommended height: 3 to 4 inches, especially in summer. Taller fescue blades shade the soil, reduce moisture evaporation, and help the grass survive summer heat stress. Scalping fescue in summer is one of the fastest ways to kill it. During summer, mow at 4 inches and skip mowing during extreme heat if possible.

Universal Mowing Rules

Regardless of species: (1) Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade height in one mowing. (2) Mow with sharp blades — dull blades tear grass and leave ragged tips that turn brown and invite disease. (3) Mow when the grass is dry for a cleaner cut. (4) Change mowing direction periodically to avoid soil compaction patterns and grain.
